DESCRIPTION OF SEMINAR: In a society that focuses on weight control by dieting and the promotion of fitness trackers in our schools, vulnerable youth are increasingly at risk for the development of Anorexia Nervosa. This is a severe psychiatric illness with serious and potentially chronic or fatal medical complications.

This alarming disease may be hard to detect because behaviors are often secretive and symptoms are cloaked in what looks like a healthy “fit” lifestyle in students who often appear otherwise high achieving and extremely capable. Even when identified, the seriousness and long-term risks may be misjudged in an effort to maintain grades, sports, and other priorities. Most individuals with Anorexia Nervosa will still be in school while sick or still recovering.

Successful treatment of Anorexia Nervosa requires a multi-disciplinary team that involving physicians, therapists, dietitians, educators, and coaches to help support parent oversight of a sick child or teen. This presentation is to help educate and empower outpatient therapists, medical professionals, and educators to understand their role in the recovery process.

CEUs: 1.5 CEUs will be awarded to Missouri Social Workers, Counselors and Addiction Counselors at the completion of the lecture. A Certificate of Attendance verifying 1.5 clock hours will be awarded to other disciplines to submit to their respective licensing boards.
